Following a low key but successful opening day on Sat 29th August, Sunday saw the first tournament played in the 2009/10 season.
The Champ of Champ singles carried over from 2008/09 saw 8 entries in reasonable weather with only a few showers briefly interrupting play over the course of the day.
The best game in the first round of this sudden death competition saw Steve Pitcon up against Shane Myers. Things seemed to be going pretty much to script up until the 22nd end with Steve holding a seemingly insurmountable lead of 19-10. However Shane came back strongly and several ends later Steve only held a narrow 20-18 lead. However the real drama was to come in the next end when Shane held 3 shots and the win after sending down his 4 bowls. With his final bowl Steve played the percentage shot which was the drive. His bowl picked up the jack which then clattered between 2 back bowls. When it came to rest the jack sat closest to one of Steve's bowls to give him the win 21-18. A great pressure bowl but with perhaps a slightly fortuitous result. In another game in this round defending champion Jamie Browning predictably accounted for 2nd year bowler Brooke Schumann 21-5 in only 10 ends. Other results saw Harry Moore beating Gordon Smith 21-15 and Bruce Buchan defeating Warren Dawson 21-12
Round 2 was semi-final time with Jamie Browning v Harry Moore and Steve Pitcon v Bruce Buchan. Very tight games could have been expected in both however Jamie was never headed in his game and ran out a comfortable 21-13 winner. Harry brought some respectability to the final score line by picking up a 4 on the 2nd to last end. Steve and Bruce had a closer fight with the scores being relatively close throughout. Steve in fact held a handy 7-3 lead early but then dropped his 2nd 3 of the game. Within a few ends Bruce had the lead and was never headed winning 21-15.
The final between Jamie Browning and Bruce Buchan was a surprisingly one sided affair. Going into the game Jamie was probably the favourite. Not only was he the defending champion but over the past 12 months or so had had some very good results in singles at higher level tournaments. Well that meant nothing. Bruce was never headed after the 2nd end and ran out an easy 21-10 winner. Congratulations Brucie - must have been that secret green keepers knowledge ay!!
